Abstract

Abstract

A project by the university of applied sciences HTW Chur (Switzerland) investigated if the broad concept of Makerspace could be remodeled for smaller libraries in Switzerland. The project based on the substantial literature on experience with makerspaces in libraries, but it considered the possibilities and potentials of smaller libraries as well. Four libraries hosted events with the “mobile makerspaces” of the project; the project team observed those. This article outlines the motivation (1) and ideas behind the project (2), describes the “mobile makerspace boxes” which were constructed in the project (3) and the events, which the libraries hosted (4). The discussion of the results (5) emphasises, among other topics, the significance of engaged staff and the need to adjust a “makerspace” to the local situation. The discussion includes critical points as well. The text ends (6) with the still open question, what the objectives for makerspaces in libraries can and should be.
