Abstract

A Sword of the Hallstatt Period of Möhrendorf (Lkr. Erlangen-Höchstadt)? Reconsidering an Old Find

An iron antenna sword, found at Möhrendorf in 1958, was discussed and despite some qualms finally classed as a Ha D sword. The classification remained problematic both for typological and constructional reasons. A bachelor’s thesis from 2013 initiated a reinvestigation of the sword, and a metallographic analysis in particular led to new results: the homogenous microstructure and especially the composition of the non-metallic inclusions evidenced the sword’s production in a modern blast furnace. In conclusion, the sword was made of late 19th or 20th century steel and can therefore not be considered a prehistoric object.
