Abstract

A Fragment of a Hallstatt Fibula from the Neamț County

In this note, the author presents some data about a fibula fragment, which was discovered on an archeological site near the Săcăluşeşti village (Agapia Commune, Neamţ County). The piece was made of bronze and belongs to a plate fibula, Boeotian-shield-shaped or Glasinac II type. This type of fibula is specific to the Late Hallstatt period and it was widespread over a vast territory in south-eastern Europe. In Romania, the most numerous Glasinac II type fibulae have been found in the south-western region and in Transylvania. In the Eastern Carpathians only three such pieces have been discovered (two at Trestiana, Vaslui County and one at Săcăluşeşti, Neamţ County). The most numerous pieces of this kind have been discovered in funerary complexes. At Săcăluşeşti, besides the fibula fragment, there were found some ceramic fragments that can be assigned to the Late Hallstatt period. These pieces appear to indicate connections with the Ciumbrud cultural group of the upper Mureş river. From the chronological point of view, our fibula fragment can be dated to the 6th century BC and it is the northernmost discovery of this kind.
