Abstract

The annual survey conducted by the DGUF since 2019 at the relevant university departments regarding the number of students and graduates in the fields of Prehistoric Archaeology as well as Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology indicates a 25% decline in the number of graduates for 2023, with currently approximately 82 MA graduates and 32 doctoral completions. Newly included for the year 2023 is the field of Provincial Roman Archaeology, which reflects approximately 13 to 17 MA degrees and 5 to 12 doctoral completions. Since approximately 31% of MA graduates remain at the university for doctoral studies, around 110 qualified professionals will be available to the non-academic labour market, which will have an additional demand of approximately 210 positions in 2024. Additionally, the academic job market for 2023 was assessed. According to the information provided by the departments, the number of professorships, mid-level academic positions, and third-party funded positions for the fields of Prehistoric Archaeology and Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology is approximately 234 positions, and for the field of Provincial Roman Archaeology, it is approximately 38 positions.
