On the status of archaeology of execution sites of the late Middle Ages and early Modern Times in German-speaking countries

Abstract

In 2008-2010, three comprehensive monographs were published on the archaeology of execution sites in the late Middle Ages and early modern period in German-speaking countries. All field investigations carried out up to this point and their results were presented. The books drew the attention of archaeologists to this topic and numerous other sites of this type were investigated in the following years. This article briefly summarizes these two dozen or so excavations of the last decade, which clarify our picture of this type of feature.
