Abstract
The debate on ethics in archaeology has many facets. One of these concerns the ways in which the foundations of ethical behavior can be taught within the archaeological disciplines at universities. In the archaeological programs at Philipps University Marburg, a path was agreed upon in 2005—the introduction of a mandatory declaration on the preservation of professional ethics for all graduates. This article examines the history of the declaration, its potential benefits, and the foundations on which it is based. Additionally, to contextualize the topic, the significance of ethics and cultural property protection at archaeological institutes in Germany is briefly reviewed.
