Abstract

The methods of social network analysis are well known in the social sciences but have not yet been applied to archaeological data. Their aim is to discover and display the structure of a given network. In cultural anthropology the communication between members of a group, the exchange of raw material and the diffusion of inventions are all subjects of interest. These aspects of human behaviour can also be observed in archaeological data. The presented applications of this analytical approach in archaeology are concentrating on similarities in pottery decoration, which serve as an indication of communication networks between Settlements of the "Bandkeramik" in the Rhineland.
