Abstract

This article will discuss the possibilities of finding and re-using primary research data from archaeological disciplines in Germany and will introduce the future data research center IANUS, that will archive and provide these kind of data. Most projects, at least in the field of ancient studies in Germany, publish their final results and catalogues as static data either in printed or digital format. However, the related ‘raw data’ remains in most cases closed and inaccessible for third parties although this demand is formulated with increasing pressure. Thus the authors examine how much data is indeed freely available and reusable in different digital archives, online-portals and data-publications. Comparisons with other disciplines and practices in other countries will contrast the results. The second part will describe the DFG funded project IANUS which aims to establish a national, domain specific technical infrastructure for the professional archiving and free dissemination of raw data. The article will present the current status of the project, its future services and the obstacles in promoting the ideas of open access and reuse of data in the field of ancient studies in Germany.
