Abstract
The care and conservation of face-mounted photographs
The conservation of contemporary finishing techniques for photographs often requires the consideration of a variety of materials. Photographs that have been face-mounted to acrylic sheets, in particular, present new challenges. In this technique, the image surface of a photograph is adhered to a sheet of transparent acrylic with either a double-sided pressure-sensitive adhesive film or a clear silicone rubber. On the verso, the print is commonly mounted to a sturdy board of hard PVC or a polyethylene aluminum laminate. The rigidity that is thus achieved often renders the use of an exterior frame unnecessary. This may also be used as an aesthetic style. Not much is known about the conservation or restoration of these photographs, since face-mounting has only been in use in artistic applications for approximately fifteen years. Known problems with acrylic sheets are usually of physical nature. Chemical deterioration has not been thoroughly examined yet. A series of experiments is currently being designed to explore conservation treatments, packaging for transport, and the chemical and physical aging characteristics of face-mounted photographs.
