About the Journal
The Heidelberg Journal of English Studies (HJES) is based at the English Department of the University of Heidelberg. It is the successor to the department’s Contributions to the Study of Language, Literature and Culture (published 2009–2013).
The HJES was conceived as a platform where junior researchers can learn about the process of academic publishing and showcase high-quality work that would otherwise only be available internally to a few people. Nonetheless, we intend to maintaining academic standards comparable to any other scholarly journal, such as peer-reviewing submissions. Most articles will initially be drawn from our academic body, though we are open to submissions from elsewhere.
The journal is published in cooperation with Heidelberg’s university library and their publishing service heiJOURNALS, which is based on the Open Journal Systems (OJS) publishing infrastructure, thereby ensuring the long-term archiving and citability of our research articles. The use of OJS means that all articles published by us will be open access (Creative Commons license CC-BY-SA 4.0) and assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). All heiJOURNALS publications are indexed in the Zeitschriftdatenbank, in the Elektronische Zeitschriftenbibliothek, and in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
We accept submissions across the whole span of English Studies: “English” meaning “English-language”, and therefore encompassing the whole diaspora of World Englishes, and not just the language itself, but also the literature, culture, and history of the countries where English is used, either as a native language or a lingua franca.
The editorial team can be contacted at journal@as.uni-heidelberg.de. The same address should be used for submissions.
