Abstract

Two further boat-shell-hilted swords have been discovered which are comparable to a previously described Prussian sword oft 1729. They also have large, plain grips. The Prussian attribution derives from the engravings on the blade. The original gilding of the twisted grip wire has largely remained on the sword with the inscription ‘FRIEDERICH WILHELM REX PRUSSIAE’; the blade of the sword with the copper wire grip wrapping bears ‘PRO DEO ET PATRIA’ as well as ‘ME FECIT POTZDAM’. Both weapons can be dated from 1720 to 1730 and confirm that surprising discoveries are still possible with early Prussian edged weapons.
