Abstract

The paper discusses a drawing that was recently discovered in the Tiroler Landesarchiv at Innsbruck. The drawing shows parts of an armor commissioned in 1557 by Archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol as a gift for the Elector August of Saxony. Andreas Brenker, Ferdinand’s representative at Augsburg, forwarded both the sketch and detailed annotations by the armourer Konrad Richter to the Archduke. Drawings like this are extremely rare; few other examples have been documented so far. The drawing in Innsbruck is particularly important both because of the prominence of the protagonists and the attached letter; it offers rare insights into the operational procedure of an armour commission in the middle of the 16th century.
