Abstract

After moving the exhibition spaces of the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art into the Humboldt Forum, the former museum spaces in Berlin’s South-West are reconfigured into a Research Campus. More than 95% of the collections of objects/ cultural belongings, historical photographs and archival materials are still housed there and the vicinity of the campus of the Freie Universität Berlin, Max-Planck Institutes etc. makes it an ideal spot for the creation of a new interdisciplinary research space on material and immaterial cultures. The two museums are joining forces with the Museum of European Cultures, the Institute of Museum Studies, the Art Library and the Rathgen Research Laboratory as well as the Ibero-American Institute to develop new forms of collaborative research, of outreach and science communication that aim to break down old hierarchies of knowledge production.
