Abstract

Development of church architecture in Western Pomerania in the years 1945–1981, based on the example of the Archdiocese of Szczecin-Kamień

This article gives details of the process of the formation of post-war church structures in the Recovered Territories, the beginning of construction activities in the field of architecture. The first sacred facilities were analyzed by taking the example of the present Archdiocese of Szczecin-Kamień. It should be recalled that, as a result of territorial changes after the Second World War, the Western and Northern territories were in the new territorial borders of Poland but their ecclesiastical status was slow to be established by the Vatican. Initially, the church’s construction activity was limited to repair works, protective actions and minor renovations; during this period no new sacred facility was created. Only after the separation of the Diocese of Szczecin-Kamień in June 1972 from the existing administrative structures, did a new period for the construction of the Catholic Church begin. The first realizations of new churches in Western Pomerania are characterized, regardless of their assessment, by their unique originality manifested mainly in the search for a new form of church building, which is part of the currently fashionable trends and architectural styles of the 20th century. These facilities among the emerging residential, industrial and service buildings at that time, thanks to their diversity of projections and solid forms, are considered as an important part of the creative achievements of the period.
