Abstract
Residential architecture – palaces, villas, houses, multi-family buildings. Introduction
In Modern Architecture is devoted to residential architecture. Each of the six studies deals with a different type of housing development: a Renaissance manor house in Wojcieszów Górny converted at the end of the 19th century into the Bergmann Palace; a private villa in Warsaw by Henryk Marconi; frontage buildings made from the remnants of millstone production in Haussmann’s Paris; a prefabricated wooden villa manufactured by Christoph & Unmack; multi-family housing in the socialist-realist style in the Bałuty district of Łódź; an avant-garde mobile home by Krzysztof Wodiczko. The authors – representatives of various scientific centers at home and abroad – while discussing selected examples of housing construction, also present the methodology of research, presenting differing scientific outlooks, differing cognitive paths, aiming to answer the question of the original idea of the house, whether it was realized according to its assumptions, the form in which it has survived to the present day, and analysing its value and significance.
