What are the Costs of Donations? The Expenses of Time and Money for the Conservation of Gifts – the Example of Flags of 1939

Due to shrinking funding, museums can often not purchase objects in order to close gaps in their collections of art and cultural historic collections. In such cases donations from private persons or institutions are welcome. However, often the capacity of time and finances for adequate conservation measures are missing. Donations – blessing or burden? In the following text the financial and time resources necessary for the treatment of 1,600 flags donated to the Schweizerische Landesmuseum Zürich are discussed.
