Abstract
Filling Cracks in Perspex – Exemplified by the Treatment of the Work ‘Strahlenfall’ by Gerhard Hoehme
The central element of the objet variable ‘Strahlenfall’ (1968) by Gerhard Hoehme consists of a Perspex cube (length 70 x 90 cm) with inserted mirrors. Numerous coloured nylon cords pass through the cube and also serve as its suspension. While on loan the cube was damaged during de-installation. This caused two cracks in the Perspex. After thorough considerations it was decided to fill the cracks with a suitable adhesive. Initial research on the properties of Perspex was carried out and the requirements neccessary for a suitable adhesive were established. The cracks were filled with a mixture of Paraloid B 67 and F 10 in white spirits. Although the treatment showed slightly different results in the various cracks, the visual appearance was satisfactory. However, there are still some unanswered questions regarding the durability of the fill material.
