Abstract
The Conservation of the Medieval Burial Plates of the Minster in Bad Doberan, Including their New Display
The Minster of Bad Doberan is one of the most important medieval architectural treasures in Germany – a brick building in Gothic style. It is one of the most important Cistercian abbey churches that has original interior furnishings which are mostly intact, including many burial plates of spiritual and regional leaders done in intricate detail. The burial plates in the Minster of Bad Doberan are of different sizes (up to 200 x 300 cm) and mostly with Gothic reliefs. Some of these burial plates are dedicated to spiritual dignitaries of the monastery and others commemorate wealthy donors. Most of theses burial plates were made during the monastery’s zenith in the 14th and 15th century. The 25 late medieval burial plates are invaluable historic and artistic testimony of the Hanseatic region as well as irreplaceable treasures. Once the restoration of all the medieval burial plates in the Minster has been completed they will be displayed in the northern side aisle where the restored. burial plates of the abbots of the Minster of Bad Doberan are already on show. All burial plates have been displayed for easy accesss and according to the latest techniques of preservation.
