Abstract

Archival storage – experience with natural ventilation for climate control
Natural ventilation is a simple way of climate control. It is more and more applied in archival storage areas, in combination with the principles of the so called “Kölner Modell”. This model makes use of the inertia of massive buildings retarding and moderating the influence of the outdoor climate onto the indoor situation. Control of storage conditions can be achieved by heating and opening of windows. The natural ventilation does not provide any conditioning of the incoming air. Therefore seasonal climatic changes are reflected in the storage areas. Three archives in Westphalia are chosen to describe the pros and cons of this method of climate control.
