Abstract

The Strehla Portraits of the Pflugk Family – “How One Painted on Silver, Copper, Lead and Other Metals”
Two of the four oval paintings from the Strehla castle, dating from c. 1700, were painted on copper, the two others on iron. Results are presented from the scientific examination of the making of the primary support and of the different ways of finishing the metal surface for the paint layers; these results are subsequently related to historical sources. The research into this field, starting in the 1970s, is also considered.
