Abstract

The Functioning of Nebulizers and a New Designed Device for Organic Solvents
The consolidation of friable and powdery pigments can be performed with either ultrasound or air pressure devices. The basic function of nebulizers is explained by technical drawings. The available nebulizers are made of plastic; they are produced for aqueous systems and are disposable. The use of solvents is not advisable, because plastic components can get dissolved during consolidation and may contaminate the adhesive. Modern pigmented surfaces for example, are calling more and more for consolidation with solvents. A newly developed device for the use of solvents is made of glass and Teflon, it is hooked to a compressor. The size of particles of common organic solvents and adhesives is measured with a scattered-light particle-size-analyser. All particles are smaller than 5 µm. Alcohols, ketenes, benzines and adhesives such as Paraloid B72 and Klucel can be nebulized. The consolidation of friable pigments on a plastic foil for a conceptual design for textiles served as a case study.
