Abstract

Arnold Böcklin’s “Die Toteninsel” of 1886. Painting technique and copy as an experiment
Arnold Böcklin’s technique of the so called varnish painting was tried in the framework of a six weeks course at the Academy of Fine Arts Dresden, making a copy of his painting “Die Toteninsel” (“Island of the Dead“). Early and more recent literature as well as the visual examination of the original in the Leipzig Museum der bildenden Künste (Museum of Fine Arts) served as the basis. The author presented her work on the occasion of a festive colloquium celebrating Roland Möller’s and Ingo Timm’s 80th birthdays.
