Abstract

The search for the form - deconstruction of a mural
The mural painting „Family“ was created by the artist Siegfried Schade in 1979 for the facade of a prefabricated building in Dresden-Prohlis. Shortly before the demolition of the building block in 2004, the painting was placed under preservation order, became the property of the city of Dresden, was removed from the wall and stored in a building yard without weather protection. The 200-ton fragmented mural remained forgotten in the yard for years and the condition deteriorated severely. In 2014, an attempt was made to bring the mural back into the consciousness of the city through an artistic competition in order to put a stop to the advanced decay of the painting. This article presents the efforts of offices and actors who have been looking for a solution for the mural for many years. It highlights some dimensions of the complex process that makes dealing with architectural heritage a task for many actors.
