Abstract

Painting with sympathetic colours in the late 19th century. A study on an unusual artistic technique
The subject of a practical study at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts was painting with sympathetic colours invented by Friedrich Dietrich. Two colours based on cobalt(II)-chloride and copper(II)-chloride as well as a mixture of cobalt(II)-chloride and iron(III)-chloride were produced and their application characteristics were investigated. The process was then tested by colouring a landscape lithograph.
