Abstract

From trompe-l'oeil to the rejected motif. Paintings on the backside created in the classical modernism and viewed in context of the history of art, museums and restoration
Since the Renaissance artists have created trompe l’oeil paintings which show rejected paintings on the backside of a painting support. On the other hand, the climax in the occurrence of real recto-verso-paintings and in particular rejected paintings, is primarily to be found in the classical modernism of the early 20th century. This paper, which is based on a conference presentation of the German speaking restorer´s associations in Europe (Cologne, November 2017) discusses the topic of rejected paintings on the verso using the example of corresponding works. The focus is set on the artist´s point of view, art-historical perspectives and the history of conservation.
