Abstract

The Painting Sailing Ship by Caspar David Friedrich – Examination and Study of the Painting Techniques

A study of painting techniques as used by Caspar David Friedrich in his Sailing Ship (c. 1815) was undertaken in connection with its examination and an assessment of the current state of research.1 The study aimed at trying out current theses in practice. In addition, an overview of infraredreflectograms, radiographs and cross-sections, taken from several of Friedrich’s paintings, was compiled at HfBK Dresden in the course of the past three decades.
