Textile Furnishings – Imaginative Replacement, Reconstruction or Conservation? Examples from the Bavarian Palaces
The overall appearance and impression of historic interiors are mainly influenced by textile furnishings. To preserve the historic appearance several possibilities are available: the conservation and preservation of original textiles in situ, a justified replacement of missing individual parts or the renewal of the furnishings by reconstructions based on originals. The success of replacement or reconstruction depends largely on thorough research and examinations, such as the study of archival sources, the collection of evidence, the conditions of the room as well as analyses of all materials and techniques. It is necessary to work closely with other specialists. Inaccurate research, misinterpretation of evidence and economic constraints can lead to a historically falsified appearance of the interior.
