Abstract
The Wall Panelling from the Refectory of San Francesco Monastery in Cori from c. 1670 in the Possession of the GRASSI Museum of Applied Art in Leipzig
After more than five years of restoration and modernisation of the Leipzig Grassi Museum, the Museum of Applied Art opened the first section of its permanent exhibition, “From Antiquity to Historism”, as part of the museum round tour. One of the highlights in the sequence of thirty showrooms is the interior of the refectory of the Franciscan monastery in Cori near Rome from the second half of the seventeenth century. The changeful history of the wooden panelling suffered most from incidents in connection with World War II. Their representation can show the significance of historic disasters to museum objects. The present paper describes above all the methodology applied and the discussion around the numerous findings which in the end lead to the restoration concept. The actual restoration measures are therefore dealt with only briefly.
