Abstract

The Reconstruction of Belts from the Erfurt Treasure
The Erfurt treasure trove, excavated in 1998 in Michaelisstrasse, consists of 700 pieces of tableware and jewellery, among them 400 components of gothic belts. In an interdisciplinary collaboration between an art historian, a scientist, a restorer/goldsmith and a restorer/weaver the belts were examined with regard to style; analyses of materials and technology completed the examination. The art of medieval goldsmiths are illuminated extensively. As a result four medieval belts were reconstructed.
