Abstract

The Conservation of a Medieval Pavise
This small pavise from the Rüstkammer Dresden has been made in the 15th century of wood with a leather front and a back laminated with parchment and has been painted from both sides. At the beginning of the restoration the wooden core was broken several times and heavily deformed, the lamination partly detached and damaged and the paint soiled, extremely loosened and lost in vast parts. By opening the back lamination, the wooden core could be fundamentally reconstructed. To reshape the deformations of the cracks on the right side, this area had to be stretched. The shield received a reinforcement on its back side.
