Abstract
Living in the Uninhabitated. The Interior Design and the Textile Furnishings of Hohenzollern Castle.
The ancestral seat of the Hohenzollern dynasty was reconstructed between 1850 and 1867 after the destruction and decay of two preceding medieval castles. It houses a number of rooms intended to accommodate members of both the royal and the princely family branches, which, however, were rarely used before 1918. In addition, the castle was conceived as a monument open to the public already during its construction. This resulted in specific conditions also for the interior design of the castle. Although little is known about the designers and producers of the textile elements the latter can be considered as fine examples of neogothic historicism. The reproduction of historic fabrics used as window decorations in 2011 and 2013 initiated a closer look at this topic.
