Light or dark. The history of museum lighting in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich
From a conservation point of view, lighting in museums is a permanent conflict between presentation and preservation. Therefore, the history of illumination is affected by manifold problems which – depending on technical development and conservational knowledge – have been judged quite differently. This is illustrated by light simulations undertaken for the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, which was opened in 1836 as one of the first picture galleries in Europe.
