Abstract

An Apulian breast-plate
In 1827 the breastplate of a fourth century BC armour was acquired by the Bartholdy collection in the Antikensammlung Berlin. In the years to follow it underwent restoration several times. During the present treatment this is carefully recorded and described. Subsequently, details of the renewed reconstruction from the fragments are presented. Emphasis is put on the discussion of the manufacturing procedure with a confrontation of the various technological observations and their interpretation. The assumption of beating the shape out of a cast round is confronted with the beating and engraving of a cast semi-finished product. Further details of the manufacture, of the breast, the navel, the closure and the silvery surface of the inside (asking for further explanation) are dealt with.
