Abstract

Treatment of the Pilgrim’s Coat from Neuzelle Monastery with Liquid Carbon Dioxide – A Report
A piece of silk crêpeline used in securing the fabric of the Neuzelle pilgrim’s coat proved to be charged with saline and organic biocides. Conservation considerations proscribed taking a sample from the coat for quantitative determination of the biocides. However, samples of dust from the coat showed that it was contaminated too. Therefore, it was to be cleaned and detoxified before restoration. Vacuum-cleaning and treatment with liquid carbon dioxide for the removal of biocides seemed most appropriate. The project could be realized thanks to the readiness of a commercial cleaning company running textile cleaning apparatus with liquid carbon dioxide. The treatment proved that 95 percent of DDT could be removed from the silk crêpeline used as a test material. The fabric of the pilgrim’s coat was in no way altered or damaged by the treatment with liquid carbon dioxide.
