Abstract

The Restoration of Ed van der Elsken’s Colour Slides Attacked by Mould
The Nederlands Fotomuseum will start the largest photographic conservation project ever undertaken in Dutch history in September 2016. It deals with the conservation of c. 45,000 colour slides taken by photographer Ed van der Elsken, attacked by mould. During recent years the conservators of the museum developed a new method of cleaning and disinfecting the slides. Thanks to a more effective workflow and external funding, the complete colour slide archive will be conserved, digitized and made accessible to the public. The article gives an overview of the causes and the effects of the mould growth on the slides. Furthermore, a first insight will be given into this particular project.
