Gerard de Lairesse‘s ”Satyr und Nymphe mit jungem Faun“
A comparison of painting technique and preservation of the original and a later version
Gerard de Lairesse’s painting ”Satyr and Nymph with young Faun“ from 1680 in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin was compared to an undated second Version from a Berlin private collection. The technical observations collected were compared to Gerard de Lairesse’s art technological instructions in his ”Groot schilderboek“. The close examination revealed considerable differences between the paintings, in contrast to the first impression of great similarity in shape and colour. On the one hand, the painting techniques vary widely, but on the other hand, the preservation of the colour in the copy is partially better, which provides valuable information concerning the former colour of the original painting.
