“You want to know much my Noble inquisitive – […] about oil paints.” Observations on the Painting Technique of Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki (1726–1801)
Today Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki is mostly known as an outstanding German graphic artist and illustrator working in the 18th century in Berlin. Less known is his comparatively small oeuvre as a painter, which will here be looked at from the perspective of his painting technology. This paper focusses on the results from the technological examination of paintings and miniatures, property of the Berliner Gemäldegalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Chodowiecki used various techniques for his coloured works: watercolour painting on ivory, enamel painting, oil painting on wood and canvas. The artist’s correspondence was used as one source on painting materials.
