Fritz Gerhardt’s casein paint: recipes and products
With Gerhardt’s casein paints, distributed by the Düsseldorf paint companies Dr. Fr. Schoenfeld und Anton Richard, numerous wall painting projects were carried out in the period from about 1870 to at least 1928. The casein paints with additions of resin, wax soap and oil soap and a special pigment preparation offered the artists a painting material that combined the advantages of oil painting with the fresco character of a wall painting technique. Since the end of the 19th century Gerhardt´s products have also been used for the restoration of historical wall paintings.
