Abstract

This paper serves to exemplify the possibilities of eAQUA by presenting an analysis of the concept of the simple life. Elements of the concept (reduction of human needs in the areas of housing, clothing and food) can be found in the image(s) of nomads in Antiquity as well as in philosophical (Cynicism, Stoicism, Epicureanism) and Christian traditions. Its origins and different meanings went back to the Homeric epic poems. The concept of the simple life is an example for the transfer of ancient knowledge into the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period.
