Das ›Apelles-Problem‹ Bildwerdung der Antike. Zur Episteme von Zeichnungen und Druckgraphiken der Frühen Neuzeit – I.

The ‘Apelles problem’ refers to a legend about the outstanding Greek painter. Apelles was said to be able to depict ‘what lies outside the realm of painting.’ Similarly, the representation of ancient artifacts raises the question of how central 'epistemic qualities' – such as colour, material properties, proportions, three-dimensionality and the like – could be reproduced in the early modern period with the specific medial properties of drawing and printmaking? This volume is the first to examine these challenges of visualisation in a broader context.
