Abstract

“Look carefully, before it all disappears”. Piotr Łukaszewicz in an interview with Anna Markowska

Dr Piotr Łukaszewicz is a distinguished curator emeritus in the National Museum in Wrocław, a museologist and an author. In an interview with Anna Markowska, he recalls his childhood spent first in Kraków, and then his relocation to Wrocław due to his father’s (Karol Łukaszewicz) employment – he was appointed director of the Wrocław ZOO (1947–1966). Dr Łukaszewicz talks about the post-war attitude of the authorities towards German monuments and culture. With regret he mentions the moment of demolition of the impressive Schlesisches Museum and the methods of alleged renovation of tenement houses, consisting in removing traces of the former presence of German inhabitants in Wrocław. Dr Łukaszewicz’s first tasks after graduation from the University, as a museum worker, was preparation of the catalogue of the Polish painting collection, published in 1967 (with Alicja Bajdor). One of his most important achievements as curator in the Painting Department was the exhibition of the “Artes” Association of Artists operating in Lviv in the years 1929–1936, which he organized in 1969. Majority of the members of the association died during the World War II and their legacy was dispersed or vanished without trace. The art of the “Artes” group was the topic of his doctoral dissertation and its publication was an important cultural event in 1975. In 2012 he prepared a groundbreaking show German Painting: From Classicism to Symbolism.
