Abstract
Jerzy Hulewicz (1886-1941) and His Problems with Formism. A Contribution to the Tempestuous History of Contacts of Poznań-Based Expressionists and Formists from Kraków
Almost at the same time, two important events took place on the Polish arena of struggle for modern art at the end of World War I. At the beginning of October 1917, the first issue of "Zdrój" was published in Poznań; the magazine soon became a forum for presenting the work of Poznań Expressionists, members of the Bunt group. On November 4, the first exhibition of Polish Expressionists (later Formists) was launched in Kraków. Members of both artistic circles quickly established close contact and the works of Kraków-based artists came out in "Zdrój". Between 1918 and 1920, artists from Kraków and Poznań jointly organized exhibitions in Kraków, Lwów, Poznań, and Warsaw. Before long, however, fundamental differences in the understanding of the essence of art by Formists and artists publishing in "Zdrój" began to emerge. The text presents an analysis of the contacts between the two groups through the activities of Jerzy Hulewicz, now considered to be the main creator and ideologist of the Poznań Bunt (next to Stanisław Kubicki), a Poznań-based artist most closely associated with the Kraków artistic milieu.
