Abstract

ANETA GRODECKA (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan) / Potworowski and Poe immersed in the world of the mind
Searching for the sources of Tadeusz Piotr Potworowski’s artistic manner, and starting from the findings on the understanding of the grotesque and types of illustration, the author examines from this angle the graphic works from Potworowski’s portfolio of eight lithographs dedicated to Edgar Allan Poe (1934). Comparative analysis of the graphic works and their primary texts brings conclusions about intersemiotic poetics and the painter’s interest in the mind, its disorders and properties. It reveals Potworowski’s sensitivity to the word and confirms that familiarization with the American novelist’s short stories and the dedication of a series of his prints to them influenced the mental basis of Potworowski’s later achievements, and helped him shape his views on art and the mind. A reflection on the painter’s stories from the 1950s, conducted in terms of their relationship to artistic strategy, is left for further research.
