Abstract

DAMIAN ZAJAC (University of Wroclaw) / An outline of transformations of Truskavets’ spatial layout. From the 18th century to the present day (historical-cartographic analysis)
Truskavets is a resort town located in western Ukraine. Although the village was first mentioned in 1427, its significant development began in the first half of the 19th century with the popularisation of the healing properties of the local mineral waters. Since then, the centre has been changing its appearance – thanks to new traffic routes and buildings, which have evolved over the years. Over the following decades, efforts were made to adapt the spatial layout of Truskavets to the needs of patients. In the course of time, the former village became a town, with multi-storey sanatorium complexes, residential buildings, a ring road and a dense street network. Nevertheless, the original spatial layout of the village has not been completely erased. In today’s street network one can easily recognize the former village roads existing at least since the 18th century, and the location of today’s centre also has its historical origin. These examples make us realise that the resort has always been inextricably linked with the village and despite architectural and spatial transformations, this has not changed to this day.
