Abstract

New in old – old in new. Double-combined layouts

The article presents the acute conflict of past and present history in the field of protection and conservation of architectural monuments. It concerns restoration and reconstruction activities in castle and sacral buildings in the state of ruin that require more intervention than conventional conservation. The question of the value and mutual relationship of contemporary art and historic art becomes particularly topical. In the face of inevitable annihilation – on the one hand – can it be reconstructed? And can it – on the other hand – when its historical time has run out, be subject to contemporary, creative, restoration, supplementation and adaptation? The examples of such rescue and conservation activities in Poland are the contemporary projects to revitalize the Góra Zamkowa complex in Mielnik on the Bug River, post-evangelical church in Wałbrzych and post-roman catholic church in Ząbkowice Śląskie. The projects prove that the methodology of hierarchical merging of their forms into the structure of their material and spiritual values is of key importance in this revitalization process. This is done through the hermeneutic discovery of the Tradition of this architecture and its exposition. The whole structural sense of a double – materially and spiritually – integrated circuit is encoded in this.
