Abstract

The Renaissance manor house in Wojcieszów Górny (currently the Bergmann Palace) and its transformation from the late 16th to the beginning of the 20th century

The article discusses the results of architectural research on the Renaissance manor house (currently the Bergmann Palace) in Wojcieszów. A description of the structure is presented at the beginning of the article, the earlier literature is discussed and the history of ownership traced from the 16th to the beginning of the 20th century. In the light of the research conducted, it emerged that the construction of the manor house was determined at the end of the 16th century. The original concept was a rectangle with dimensions of 27 by 15 metres with an adjacent kitchen to the south. The body was shaped as a two-story building with dormers on the axis of the longer elevations. The north facade was given a regular seven-axis composition with windows framed with stone fascia. The interiors were arranged in a two-tract  three-bay layout with a hall and staircase in the central bay. A two-story annex was added to the east elevation, probably at the end of the 17th century. The most substantial transformation affecting the manor house occurred during the reconstruction carried out in 1891-1892 at the initiative of Richard von Bergmann, according to the project of Wrocław (Breslau) architect Wilhelm Rehnius. During these works a wing with a tower was added to the western facade, while the eastern annex was enlarged and the interiors were transformed. The palace was partially burned down in 1930.
