Abstract

Millstone residential buildings of the Paris region

The first millstone houses in Paris and the surrounding area were built at the beginning of the 20th century. These constructions were made possible by the presence of numerous local quarries, which were rich in such deposits. When the solid stone was extracted for the production of mill wheels, a finer ore was created. This ore was then used to build roads, bridges, houses or other buildings. Wide access to this material and its low cost resulted in the construction of typical suburban villas, individual houses as well as numerous multi-family houses for workers in and around Paris. However, after World War II, the need for millstone drastically decreased and most of the quarries stopped their activities. This popular stone was then replaced by concrete and bricks, whose production was faster and cheaper.
