Abstract

Maximilian Sliwka (1871–1940) – an Upper Silesian builder of sacred architecture. Contribution to the biography

The figure of Maximilian Sliwka (1871–1940), an Upper Silesian designer and builder, active from the 1890s to the third decade of the 20th century, the creator of numerous implementations, especially in the field of broadly understood sacred architecture, including the neo-Gothic church under the invocation of Good Shepherd in the Karb district of Bytom has not been thoroughly researched and described so far. This article, based on archival and bibliographic inquiries, as well as the author’s own interviews and research, is the first attempt to comprehensively present both the biography and professional achievements of Max Sliwka, and its aim is also to show Sliwka’s significant contribution to the architectural heritage of Upper Silesia. The text, as the author claims, is to constitute the basis for further in-depth studies on the presented figure.
