Abstract

Re-attaching techniques for loose book covers – Joint tacketing and variations

The article deals with the restoration of otherwise well preserved books with loose covers. This type of damage occurs on books of the sixteenth-century and earlier as well with books of the nineteenth-century. While viewing the development of the technique and materials the causes are pointed out briefly, the well-known solutions (rebacking, board slotting, Japanese paper hinge repair) are described with their pros and cons being designated. Joint tacketing and its individual steps is described in detail on the basis of drawings and photos and variations of this technique follow. They result from the changed demands of materials and techniques of each book. The possibilities resulting from this for restoration are pointed out with the aid of photos and drawings, so that the individual steps are represented in a very practical way.
