Abstract
The Chipolin Technique
A coating of over-varnished distemper from the 2nd half of the 18th century
The so-called chipolin technique is a white coating consisting of varnished distemper, which can be classified as one of the many techniques of the rococo white coatings. A brief art- historical classification and differentiation from other white coatings of the period is followed by a report on the practical implementation of the recipes handed down in historical written sources. Since direct comparison with preserved objects of this type was not possible, various test panels were made in order to achieve an experimental approach to the surface properties and the aesthetic effect of the chipolin. The focus was on questions about the materials used, the technical implementation, the spirit varnishes recommended by the historical authors and possible varnish polishes.
